                     IRS RELEASES NEW FARMERS TAX GUIDE

The Internal Revenue Service has released an updated version of Publication 225, Farmers Tax Guide, for use in preparing 2004 returns.  The publication explains how the federal tax laws apply to farming.  There are a number of
administrative and tax law changes for 2004. For example, the exclusion of cost-share payments for small watershed programs, standard
mileage rates, reforestation costs, and postponing gain on weather-related sales of livestock.  The Farmer's Tax Guide is available

Lawsuit Accuses Feds of Mismanaging Conservation Program

SEATTLE — The National Wildlife Federation has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that duck, pheasant, and other ground-nesting bird populations are being harmed by mismanagement of a government program that pays farmers to set aside croplands.
